Blogvent Day 24 – In conclusion….

Wow the last twenty four days came round rather quickly! It seems like mere moments ago that I set out on this year’s Blogvent mission to count down to Christmas with a different festive feature every day and here I am, on Christmas Eve, officially out of time to see any more movies. Considering the demands on my time from my day job I think I’ve done pretty well to get through twenty three movies in as many days.

It’s been an interesting road, at one point I suffered a minor breakdown so overexposed was I to the distilled urgings for humanity, peace, love and understanding from the movies. Honestly. I’m not joking. If you want to feel like a selfish, materialistic, superficial human being, just overdose on Chrimbo films.

So what have I learned? Well, firstly, there doesn’t seem to be such a thing as a standard issue Christmas film. I’ve seen puppets of all kinds (singing/dancing, homicidal, drug addicted). I’ve seen psychos, cops, heroes, villains, victims, lovers and haters of all shapes and sizes. There’s been laughter, tears, suspense, angst and occasionally downright confusion.

What nearly all the films have in common though is one thing, one overriding theme that can be traced through the nineteenth century storytelling of Dickens through the hallucinagenic madness of Santa Claus Conquers The Martians and demented hack’n’slashery of Silent Night Deadly Night all the way to the dirty laughter of Bad Santa. If Christmas is about anything it’s about love for your fellow humans and that if we keep enough love in our hearts for even the most unlovable members of our society then the world will be a better place and we can truly think of ourselves as human.

So with that in mind, all that remains is to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. I’m going to take a break for the rest of 2011, hopefully I’ll see you all in 2012!
